ESCAPED PRISONER RECAPTURED.
BUCKLEY ARRESTED IN WELLINGTON.
The recapture was effected by Detectives in Wellington on Tuesday of John Buckley, who, with Frank Bailer, a fellow prisoner, escaped from Mt. Eden Gaol, Auckland, on the night of May 26tli last. Bailer was recaptured at Shark Bay, Birkenhead, a few days after the escape.
After several exploits in the Birkenhead district, Buckley made his way to the King Country, and was later heard of at Ivakahi, near Ta.umarunui. The next information concerning him came last Friday in the form of a letter to the editor of the “Sun” (Auckland), bearing a iChristchurch postmark dated July 11th. In the letter Buckley protested against being accused of committing several crimes, and gave his reasons for escaping from Mt. Eden Gaol. In a footnote to the letter Bucldey said that he had made provision against his whereabouts being discovered from the postmark.
It was ascertained on Tuesday that the Wellington police had known for some clays past that Buckley was in the city. He was recognised one day last week by a constable, but managed to elude arrest.
■ F Although only 24 years of age, he has already been declared an habitual criminal.
Buckley, who is a native of England, will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of housebreaking.
