EASY VICTORY

DEFEAT OF RHODESIA. FAST SCORING IN FIRST HALF. ALL BLACKS BEATEN IN LINEOUTS. BULAWAYO, July 14. At Rhodesia to-day New Zealand had a runaway win over Rhodesia by 44 points to 8. There was brilliant sunshine and heat similar to .a summer’s day in New Zealand. The game was played on a ground of hard red dirt before a crowd of 3000. An erratic breeze blew down-field. I. Finlayson replaced Cyril Brownlie, who has not recovered from influenza. Rhodesia might be said to be “babies” at Rugby. They know little about the finer points of the game. The All Blacks, throwing the ball about in tnie New Zealand style, overran their opponents easily in the first half. In the second spell Rhodesia, copying the New Zealand tactics, played a fast, open game with the wind behind them, but they could not finish off their movements. WHIRLWIND ATTACKS. LOSERS IMPROVE IN SECOND SPELL. The New Zealand team was as follows: Full-back. —D. Lindsay. Three-quarters.—A. Robilliard, F. Lucas, C. Rushbrook. Five-eighths.—H. Lilburne, L. Johnson. Half-hack. —Dailey. Wing-forward.—G. Scrimshaw. Hookers. —J. Horo, H. Swain. Loc. —G. Alley. Supports.—M. Brownlie, I. Finlayson. Back row.—E. Snow, W. Hazlett. The first spell was nothing but a series of successful attacks by the visitors, but the home side almost held its own in the latter half.

The game had not been going long before from an opening from a scrum near Rhodesia’s twenty-five a pass went to Johnson and then to Lilburne, who faced over near the posts; Lindsay converted. All Blacks 5 Rhodesia 0

A number of whirlwind attacks by both the New Zealand forwards and backs were followed by Johnson 'kicking down-field, having secured the ball from a ruck. Robilliard picked up and passed to Lucas, who was tackled wrih the ball. Scrimshaw, backing up, took the ball on the bounce and scored behind the posts. Lindsay made the total ten. 1 All Blacks 10 Rhodesia 0

The New Zealand forwards made matters lively, and from a melee on the home side’s line Brownlie went over. Lindsay just missed with a kick from the touchline. All Blacks 13 Rhodesia 0 HOME TEAM ATTACK.

Rhodesia then took a spell at attack, anil a short punt over the heads of the New Zealand backs created an interesting situation, but Lindsay cleared, and pretty in-and-out passing by the New Zealand backs placed the visitors once more in a threatening position. However, many mistakes followed until, from a scrum, Dailey passed to Johnson, who ran through a gap to score under the posls. Lindsay converted. All Blacks 18 Rhodesia 0 A minute later Dailey ran from a scrum and passed to Johnson, who again scored. Lindsay’s kick was successful. All Blacks 23 Rhodesia 0 Snow obtained possession of the ball following the kick-off and -threw it half-way across the field to Lucas, initialing ,a spectacular movement in which the ball was handled by Robilliard, Lucas again, Lilburne, Swain, and, finally, Findlayson, who completed the effort. Lindsay failed to convert. All Blacks 26 Rhodesia ... 0 Snow was .again responsible for a neat opening sending Scrimshaw away from the ruck. The latter passed bo Rushbrook and the Wellington mail scored an easy try. Lindsay was successful with the kick, making the score at half-time: All Blacks 31 Rhodesia -. 0 THE SECOND HALF. Tho opening of tho second half saw Rhodesia indulging in serious tackling, with the consequence that the tirSt few All Blacks’ attacks were smashed. Then file fortunes changed. Rhodesia stai Led to throw the ball about in the New Zealand style, .and play hovered on the New Zealand line for a time. Rushbrook was caught offside under the posts and Thompson landed a goal. All Blacks 31 Rhodesia 3 New Zealand revived tlieir whirlwind tactics, and after a series of spectacular movements Johnson cut in after getting Dailey’s pass front .a scrum, and sent Robilliard over far out. Lindsav missed with the kick. All Blacks 34 Rhodesia 3 Hazlett’s turn to score canto next. Dailey sont Johnson away from a scrum ; the ball came back to Dailey, who gave it to Hazlett, and the Southland man had a clear run in. Lindsay converted. All Blacks 39 Rhodesia 3 RHODESIA’S CLEVER TRY. The greatest excitement of the match came when Rhodesia scored a clever try. Mclntosh intercepted a pass and kicked neatly over Lindsay’s head, followed up, .and scored under the posts. Thompson took the kick, which was successful. All Blacks 39 Ithodesia ... 8 There was a bit of mixing among the forwards; then the Rhodesia backs started to opoii up again, but there was no finish to their movements. Brownlie got away from .a ruck and passed to Scrimshaw. Possession was tlicn transferred to Lucas, who sidestepped and swerved his way through to score the last try of the match. Lindsay converted. Ali Blacks ..' 44 Rhodesia 8 Dailey played a lino game, feeding the backs generously. Lilburne was uncertain, but ho got away in a couple of good openings. The three-quarter line was seen in many spectacular movements, and Lindsay was always sound. BLACKS BEATEN FOR BALL. Although the New Zealand scrummaking was improved to-day, tho visitors were still beaten for the ball, and a surprising feature of the match was that Rhodesia had the better of fourteen out of twenty-seven line-outs. This was the first time on the tour that New Zealand had been beaten in this department. Finlayson, Hazlett, Snow .and Brownlie played good football. The team will leave to-morrow for Johannesburg, where the Test side will start hard training.
