THE HEMP MARKET

JUNE GRADING RETURNS,

The gentling returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of June have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —

Twenty-three bales at Auckland, U at Wellington, 22 at Foxton, and sat the Bluff were rejected. One at Lyttelton was condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis :—Good fair IQS (302), high fair 1,044 (1,561), low fair 1,276 (1,702), common 107 (691), rejected 64 (132), condemned 1 (nil), a total of 2,690 bales, as against 1,388 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 1,698 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 909, Wellington 425, Foxton 429, Picton 53, Blenheim 38, Pt. Chalmers 171, Bluff 600, Lyttelton 65. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —

Twenty-one bales at Auckland, 4 at Foxton, one at Pt. Chalmers, and 7 at Lyttelton were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 48 (157), 2nd grade 403 (877), 3rd grade 411 (420), condemned 33 (66), a total of 895 bales, as again 1,520 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 625 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 206, Wellington 120, Foxton 133, Picton 17, Blenheim 6, Pt. Chalmers 34, Bluff 259, Lyttelton 30. Stripper slips. —Seven bales at Auckland and 59 at the Bluff were passed for export. Three bales at the Bluff were condemned. A total number of 69 bales, as against 63 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 6 bales.
