TWELVE SHILLINGS A DAY.
• * * It was stated at Tuesday’s meeting of the unemployment committee at Wanganui that three members had decided upon a plan of canvassing the city and suburbs with a view to raising a large sum for the relief of unemployment, Tho chief obstacle they had to face was reluctance on the part of the public to subscribe to the fund, because of the agitation there had been for the- award rate of pay being paid to the men, who were being employed on relief work. Mr A. Dahl said that as a member of the unemployed lie realised what tho position was: “If,” lie added, “it conies to a question of award wages or nothing, I would rather take 12/- a day than hold out for the award rate.”
