MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held in Sandon on Tuesday, Cr. W. E. Barber presiding. Also present were Crs. .J. Boyce, D. \A 1 . Reed and W. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Works Department, stating that a tender had been accepted for the dismantling of the old Shannon traffi'c bridge.—Received. From (he Moutoa Drainage Board, advising that it had agreed to subsidise the erection' of the stopbank near the old Shannon bridge, not exceeding 25 per cent, of the total cost, or the maximum payment by the board of £IOO on the above basis. The proposal was contingent on the Public Works Department granting a £1 for £1 subsidy and the Manawatu County Council finding the balance, the work to be commenced within one month. —Action was deterred pending a report from the chairman and clerk. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the acting-engineer, Mr. ’A. Bond: — Main Highways. —Foxton-Shan-non: The usual grading and patching have been proceeded with, and the new bridge approach road is now receiving its final grading. The Power Board has removed its poles and culverts have been put in where necessary at gateways. Minor repairs have been carried out to the Shannon punt. Whirokino Road: Grading lias been carried out and metal has been dumped at convenient intervals for future repair work. Foxton-Himatangi: In addition to the usual grading and patching, all timber culverts are being removed and replaced by concrete pines where necessary. Twen-ty-three concrete culverts are'complete to date. liimatangi-Rangio-tu: The heavy roller has been consolidating the new metal on this length and has made a marked improvement. Grading has been carried out and also a little draining. Foxton Beach Road: A little metal has been spread and the usual grading carried out. Awahou Riding.—Culverts have been cleaned on No. 2 Line and metalling is to be commenced on Nos. 2 and 0 Lines immediately, also on Barber’s Road. Tramway. The track gang have been engaged in renewing fishplates, packing and relaying rails and weeding and adjusting curves, etc. Crushing Plant. —A fairly continuous supply of metal was maintained until the heavy rains set in. Difficulty is now being experienced in obtaining metal owing to the rise in the river and wet weather. Official notice has now been received from the Main Highways Board that most of the plant and material for the blackline cable exccavator has been ordered from local and British firms abroad. A start will be made immediately on foundations and preparatory work for the installation of this plant,—Adopted. TRAMWAY REPORT.
The tramway manager, Mr. A. K. Drew, reported that the chief items of traffic for the month were : Grain 394 tons, minerals and manure 3343 tons, general merchandise 62 tons, stock 18 trucks, metal 258 trucks, eggs 79 crates and timber 200 sup. ft. Fares amounted to 14/10. The accounts showed a credit balance of £6 12s 8d for the month’s working. —Adopted.
TRAFFIC MANAGER’S REPORT. The traffic inspector, Mr. W. Berry, submitted the following report: —I have notified a number of rural mail box owners to move their boxes further back from the metalled edge of the road and a number of them have already done so. I hope to get in touch with the remainder during the present month. I have also notified the owners of property to trim back their hedges at the corners so as to give a clear view to motorists. One person, for failing to have a reflector on his lorry, was fined 20s and costs, and one person for allowing a horse to wander at night was lined 20s and costs at the Bulls Court. Four informations for allowing stock to wander were dealt with at Foxton and each offender was fined 10s and costs, while one case was remanded until next court day. One person, for allegedly hawking without a license, will 'be dealt with next court day at Feilding, also will a number of persons for allegedly allowing stock to wander. Informations will also be laid against two lorry drivers for overloading. Two informations were laid against a charabanc driver for not having proper lights in front and no tail light, he being fined 20s and 10s respectively on each charge. Three building permits have been issued during the month and fees amounting to 25s have been collected. —Adopted. GENERAL. The following alterations were made on the rate roll: —E. L.
