Replying to a deputation of labour organisations and members of the Parliamentary Labour Party to-day, >, king amending legislation to prude that public servants who appear ns candidates at the general election should not lose their status service, Mr Coates said that nobody war. anxious to deprive public servants ot the right to take part in political con:ds. At the same time, a good nian.v p.oplo felt that it was not a good thing to encourage public servants to parti ipatn in the whirl of politics, hut he himself was averse to imposing disabilities on public servants simply# because they figured as candidates. He could not' give the deputation any definite promise, but he would placo the matter before Cabinet and endeavour to get a decision at an early date.
