HOROWHENUA BEAT RANGITIKEI

Played on the Foxton racecourse on Sat. urday, tho Bobbington Shield representative match between Horowhenua and Rangitikei was fast, clean and-open throughout, but tho former were the better team in every respect and had a decsivo'win by 20 points to nil, thus registering their sixth successive victory. Tho teams lined out as follow: Ilorowhenua (red and black). —N. Ryder, 11. Taylor, W. Westwood, M. Roberts, 11. Warren, T. Parata, W. Parata, JM. Ilakaraia, I). McDonald, W. Moodie, A, Ward, D. Tatana, R. Satherly, N. McDonell and L. Dnlzell. , . Rangitikoi (green). —Jliggins, J. li.ru, U. Hartley, J. Potalca, D. Cameron, Or. Shanloy, B.- Johnson, J. Timmins, H. Lumsden, C. Ellery, J. Adams, S. Gibbs, Toliu, D. Stevens and J. Walker. Ilorowhenua won the toss and set the game in action. Rangitikei were immediately cm the offensive, but Taylor stopped tho rush with" a well placed lino kick. From tho line-out Horowhenua invaded and Westwood handed the ball to Taylor, who was pushed out at the corner. From the line-out the greens cleared, but were immediately compelled to force. On resumption, with a dribbling rush, the reds again attacked and matters looked dangerous until tho greens force down. Later, from an infringement, Taylor made a particularly fine effort to goal, but the ball fell short. Handling the ball well, the red forwards swept down the field and Tatana secured on the line, to go ever. Taylor’s kick failed. Spurred on by the score against them, tho greens attacked but faulty handling spoilt their movements. With a centre kick, Taylor sent the reds away and a scramble ensued near the iine, but the greens forced down. Adopting excellent passing tactics, Horowncnua came downfield anci Roberts made an excellent run along the line, but was grassed by Ihg-n-ins. The greens had tho beat of matters For tho next few minutes but Westwood again put them in danger with a good field kick and Rangitikei were compelled to again force. Coining upheld with a passing rush, the greens waded red territory, but with a field kick, Westwood cleared and, following a run down the line, Taylor passed to him, enabling him to go over. Taylor’s kick failed. , Faulty passing again spoiled the greens break aways and Westwood was playing a sound game for the reds. Taking the ball at their feet, Ilorowhenua repeatedly made matters dangerous for thq, greens, and from a scrum near the line, Westwood secured and passed to Parata, who however, went out, and the greens cleared. Horowhenua were then awarded a free kick through a scrum infringement and Taylor attempted to goal, but missed the uprights, Rangitikei forcing. Play for the next few minutes was hard and fast with the greens constantly in danger and, from a' line out close to the line, Taylor dived over. His kick failed. On resumption, Taylor, with a dribbling rush took play down to the greens’ territory, but an infringement gave them a chance to clear. Timmins then broke away for Rangitikei and off-side play gave Potalca a shot at goal, but the ball went wide, the reds forcing. -From a loose ruck, ’Potalca tried to drop a goal, but missed, McDonald kicking out. From the line-out, Rotarts. broke away and came downfield, but Potalca secured and returned play to neutral territory. The .teds, however, again attacked and a hard struggle ensued in the greens’ twenty-five until, from a free kick, Rangitikei cleared. Coming upiield with a determined rush, tho greens had Horowhenua in danger, but Westwood saved by finding the line. Rangitikei then secured from the line-out, and the forwards went away with a rush, but faulty passing spoiled matters and Westwood intercepted and broke through but was collared and lost possession, tho ball going out. Half-time was then called. ' SECOND SPELL. With a good line-kick, Horowhenua opened the second spoil, deeply invading the greens’ territory and ,from the line-tout, Roberts secured', but a forward pass spoiled chances. Play was then held up for a few minutes through Gibb being injured. On resumption, (he reds were aggressive and, by excellent passing, came up to the greens’ lino, but an infringement, allowed the latter to clear and Hartley, with a “liner,” sent the play further downfield. Following the line-out (he greens were awarded a free kick and Piotaka took a shot which fell short and Tatana broko through, hut the ball went out near the corner. The greens successfully cleared, but Horowhenua attacked strenuously and Rangitikei were in serious trouble until a free kick enabled them to again clear. Maintaining the pressure, the reds again invaded the green territory, but a line kick gave Rangitikei a much.' need respite. At. this stage Gibb retired injured, being replaced by R. Lonrie. In the reds’ territory, Rangitikei were awarded a free kick, but. P.otaka’s kick went. wide. With a, dribbling rush, Horowhenua came upheld .and, following an opening made by Hakarain, Roberts scored. McDonald’s kick failed. On the continuance of play, Parata. broke away, Wit Shanloy returned the ball and play centred at. midfield, until Westwood secured and passed to Warren who went over. The try, however, was disallowed through offside play. After the kick-off away went the Northern forwards aaul hacks in a Gpectacular combined passing movement, and Lindsay saved a likely try by a magnificent line kick from the goal-line to halfway. McGregor, with another good kick, put New Zealand on the attack. Ward held on too long, and a certain try was missed. BRAND BREAKS A RIB. Tn a forward struggle, Brand had a rib broken and was carried off. . Taking a high punt in Ins stride, Lindsay sent Stewart away. Rushbrook took Stewart’s pass at halfway, and with: a great run, in which lie bent six men, scored a magnificent try.
