WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL.
An amusing and spectacular game was played on the local racecourse yesterday afternoon between teams representing Foxton and Levin Wednesday players, although it was "noticeable that the majority of both sides were Saturday exponents, and four or live were the chosen of Horowhenua in Saturday’s rep. game. The jerseys worn were like Joseph’s coat, of many indeed some played in long pants, shirts or singlets. A visiting forward who rejoiced in the sobriquet of “Skinny,” was clad in a varicoloured jersey, nightcap and shin pads. 'Besides playing the ball or man, he argued with the referee that there were other things than scrums in the game of Rugby. The referee, by the way, was “Trooper” Robinson, whose shins were protected by leggings. Some of his rulings both astonished the players and convulsed the spectators, which included two females. He also warned the rotund president of the Foxton Football Club, resplendent in the colours of his club, to put out his cigarette and not to loaf offside. One player sported a “sporan.” He was a Maori, but he , claimed Scotch descent. The game at times was full of incident, and on two occasions an exhibition of the manly art was narrowly averted. Both sides showed that the defeat of the All Blacks had inspired them with vicious thrusts at imaginary Springboks. Foxton scored several tries, and Taylor was indulging in practice kicks while the combatants were sprawled out in all directions. Anyhow, Foxton won by a fair margin of points. HOROWfHENUA RUGBY COUNCIL. The usual weekly meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Council was held in Levin on Tuesday evening. It was decided to endeavour to have the Wellington-Horowhenua match played in Levin.
Arrangements were discussed in connection with the Bebbington Shield match, Horowhenua v.- Rangitikei to be played at Foxton on Saturday.
Mr. Scott was elected referee for the match.
Notification was received from the Foxton Club that their thirds would be pleased to play the Shannon thirds as a curtain-raiser on July 7th. This was agreed to by the Council, which stipulated that this match must be finished by 2.45 p.m. Mr. Phillips was requested to instruct the Referees’ Association to supply a referee for the cur-tain-raiser. It was decided to play the Bush match-for the Shield on July 28th. All Shield matches will be played in Levin in future. PRIMARY SCHOOLS RUGBY. WERAROA SENIORS’ WIN REVERSED. , As a result of including several members of the Wanderers Club in their team on Saturday, the Weraroa Club have been deprived by the Horowhenua Rugby Council of their win over Shannon, whom they sensationally defeated by 27 points to 6. At the meeting of the Council’s management committee last Tuesday, the irregularity was duly reported, and a resolution was passed awarding the game to Shannon.
In consequence of the above decision, Shannon’s- championship points become eleven —one below Wanderers, the leading club. At Palmerston North yesterday Wanganui College second fifteen defeated Palmerston North Boys’ High School second fifteen by 22 points to nil. A reminder is given of the committee meeting of the Foxton Football Club, to be held in Walls’ rooms at 7 o’clock this evening. The following will represent Foxton Thirds against Shannon on Saturday:— Huff, Easton, Chrystall, Newton, Newson, Hartley, Moore, Anderson, Smith, Marshall, Taylor, Newth, Coley, Simpson, and Moses.
