RESISTING THE POLICE.
FINE OF £5 IMPOSED
At the local courthouse this morning before Mr. A. Fraser, J.P., Oscar Jakobsen, a labourer, 25 years of age, was charged with being drunk in Main Street on July 2nd., and also with resisting the police. Constable Owen gave evidence to the effect that shortly after G o’clock last night witness saw Jakobsen drunk in Main Street and arrested him, when he seemed to go mad, resisting arrest violently and it was some time before he was handcuffed. Even then he resisted all the way to the police station. This was accused’s first offence and he had been bailed out this morning' for 5/- on the drunkenness charge and £5 on the charge of resisting the police. Constable Bell gave corroborative evidence and said accused, who was between 25 and 2G years of age, was a very powerfully-built man.
Constable Owen said the Act provided for a £2O fine in default 3 months’ imprisonment for resisting the police. Accused, who did not appear, was convicted and fined 5/- on the first charge and £5 on the second, in default 14 days’ imprisonment.
