RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-DAY’S TEST MATCH. News of the result of the first test match between the All Blacks and Springboks to be played at Durban to-day, will be awaited with keen interest throughout the Dominion. The Squill African papers are optimistic about the chances of the Springboks and express surprise that Nicholls is not included among the All Blacks. They hold the opinion that the All Blacks’ scrum formation will place them at a disadvantage. The game will be strenuously fought among these giants and whichever side wins, the margin of points will be small. THE SPRINGBOK TEAM. The following will represent the Springboks:— Full-back: J. C. Tindaal; threequarters: J. Prinsloo, Duffy, S. Osier, Brand or J. Slater; fly-half: B. L. Osier; scrum-half: P. de Villiers; forwards: P. J. Mostert, T. L. Kruger, Dr. .T. van Druten, Daneel, S. van Wyk, Pretorious, P. J. Nel, Potgieter. ALL BLACK TEAM. The New Zealand team for today’s Test match is as follows: — Full back: Lindsay; three-quar-ters: Grenside, Carleton, Robilliard; five-eighths: Strang, Johnson; half: Dailey; wing forward: Scrimshaw; forwards: Swain, Hadley, Maurice Brownlie, Alley, Finlavson, Stewart, Hazlett. A Message from Durban says: The New Zealand team is more confident than ever. The general opinion of the New Zealanders travelling is “We can’t lose if we get 35 per cent, advantage in the scrums. The backs should carry the day in all the big Rugby matches. “It is sure to be a great forward bailie, with an occasional run amongst the backs, and your correspondent’s opinion is that New Zealand will win.”

FOOTBALL CASUALTIES. The percentage of casualties sustained at football this season has been fairly high in regard to local players. As a result of concussion early in the season A. Taylor had to fersake the ranks of the Juniors, while the same day Findlay had to retire with a broken collar-bone. As a result of an injury received to his back Chipper is unable to play to-day against Shannon, while it is doubtful if Thompson will be able to take his place on the.wing. He was ordered to bed by the doctor yesterday and his place, if vacant today, will be hard to fill. Thompson has been playing dashing football this season and has scored all Foxton’s tries to date. • Woods was unfortunate in the senior match against Shannon in sustaining a broken wrist which will incapacitate him for the rest, of the season.
