THE LATE IHAKARA TUKUMARU.
PROPOSAL TO PERPETUATE MEMORY. At the social function held in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce meeting last- night, Mr P. A. Mason brought up a suggestion to perpetuate the memory of the late Ihakara Tukumaru, the old chief who figured so largely in Native affairs along this coast in the early days. The old chief, said Mr Mason, had been of a very.generous disposition, and was a gentleman of character. The sites of the. local Courthouse, Triangle and Ihakara Garden, as well as both school sites, had been donated by the late Ihakara Tukumaru, and the only recognition of his gifts and services to the people of the district were a couple of tablets, one on the new school, and the other on the gate of Ihakara Gardens. He thought that some more lifting recognition of so line a character should le made. The matter will receive the caremi consideration of members at the iext meeting of the Chamber.
