HARBOUR BOARD LEASES.

LEGALITY OF TRANSFER CHARGES QUESTIONED.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board a letter was received from Messrs Graham and Reed, enclosing consent fee of £2 2s, under protest, in connection with a transfer of a section at Manawatu Heads. The Secretary (Mr R. Rangiiieuea) stated that the Board had been in the habit of charging £2 2s consent fee in connection with transfers, the practice having been instituted many years ago by his predecessor. The Board had no legal power to make such a charge. Some years ago the charge had been one guinea, which it was contended would cover clerical charges in connection with the preparation of [he transfer. Later it had been raised to £2 2s. , Air Alortensen thought it would be advisable for the Board to reduce its charge to £1 Is, as he thought people would pay £1 Is where- T as they took exception to the payment of £2 2s. AIV J. Chrystall gave notice of motion to rescind the motion on ■- the minute books which reads: — “That on all future transfers of Harbour Board properties a fee of £2 2s be paid to the Boarl by the transferor.”
