FOXTON (9) v. SHANNON (6). Foxton met Shannon Seniors on the Shannon Domain on Saturday and defeated the home team by 9 points to G. The display was a disappointing one, though Foxton deserved a win. Shannon won the toss and elected to play with the wind. From the start off they were awarded a free kick on the halfway line, which Hurst failed to put between the posts. Foxton attacked hard and Procter made an excellent run to Shannon’s 25 to be downed by Marsh on the touch line. From tlie line out the hall went to the other side of the field, enabling Wlestwoorl to register first blood for Foxton. The kick against the wind failed. •
Shannon now compelled Foxton to force and after some hard attacking in which Hurst, ftobbife, Roberts and Mitchell were prominent, Whyte scored an excellent try. The kick failed. Shannon 3—Foxton 3. During this spell Procter (Foxton), received a nasty kick on the head, and had to retire for a few minutes. Foxton now attacked, and were awarded a free kick for offside on Shannon’s 25 line. Meta made a brilliant kick but the wind blew the ball out. Pratt, Dalzell and Mitchell retaliated and compelled Foxton to force. Renata (Foxton) obtained the ball and after a brilliant ran scored. Shannon 3 —Foxton 6. Satherley, Marsh, Mitchell and Dalzell put in some good work and kept. the hall in Foxton’s half. Eventually Hurst secured and ran through to score a good try. The kick was disallowed owing to the hall being handled twice. Shannon G —Foxton G, Shannon continued to press, but Meta cleared well. Marsh fumbled badly and Fuller and Robinson following up hard got possession, enabling Robinson to add three more points to Foxton’s score before half time went. Foxton 9—Shannon G. No further score was added in the second half. Shannon succeeded in preventing Foxton scoring and attacked hard, but the visitors had the wind behind them and compelled Shannon to play on the defensive. The ball was thrown about well. Taylor (Foxton) had a brilliant attempt at goal from a penalty awarded on the half way line, the ball striking the cross bar. Walls, Hurst, Marsh, Dalzell, Baker and Roberts played well for Shannon, while Procter, Meta and Taylor were outstanding for Foxton. Foxton played the last ten minutes with only fourteen men, one member of the team receiving medical attention for an injury to his wrist. Mr. Parata controlled the game.
THE JUNIOR GAME. FOXTON (G) v. MIRANUI (3). The clash between' the above junior teams on the local racecourse on Saturday was the best exposition of Rugby seen locally so far this season. The weather was nippy with a cold easterly Avind blowing across the field. Despite the keenness of the weather there was a fair attendance and they Avere well repaid for braving the icy blast. Miranui fielded its full strength and held the advantage in weight, but the local boys managed to secure the ball luorc often from the serum. The game was played with the utmost good feeling and both teams are to be commended on this account. Broad, ,wko is on the sick list, was absent from the local backs.
Foxton displayed much improved form than on previous occasions, and their combination was good. There was a tendency, however, to hang on to the ball too long— and two certain tries were lost owing to this. The kicking, too, lacked judgment as no allowance was made for windage, which nullified good opportunities. There Avas not a passenger in the whole team and the pace from start to finish Avas a cracker. While both backs and forwards did well, special mention must be made of Thompson, whose fast dashes from the three-quarter line were a thorn in the side or Miranui.
Miranui for the. greater part of the game were kept on the defensive, hut their backs put in some splendid work, particularly Croon and Picard, but their centre’s had handling spoilt some dangerous open play. Croon’s try Avas the result of a spectacular run and Avas one of the finest episodes of the game. Picard’s well-judged kicking Avas another feature, hut he Avas apt to get hustled Avhen playing closer up. He is a safer man at full back than in the three-quarter line. In his position he has no equal in the district. The forwards are a fine pack and worked like Trojans. In fact, there is little to choose betAveen the lavo teams both back and fovAvard, but Foxton on the day’s play shoAA T ed a wider margin of superiority. The game opened with an attacking movement by Foxton and Miranui’s territory Avas invaded. Thompson, Ross and Stevenson attempted to break through. Picard marked and cleared temporarily, but Williams picked up and had a shot, the ball striking the crossbar. Green (Miranui), uoav toolc a hand and rushed play to yellow’s 25, Avhere offside play pulled them up. Stevenson headed another attack and again greens were kept busy clearing their line and Picard marking, eased the situation. Back play went to the green line and offside play by Foxton again brought relief. Rankin, Procter and Thompson started off and the latter Avith a strong run crossed at the corner. SteA 7 enson failed .to add the major points—Foxton 3 Miranui nil. Shortly after yelloAVS were again knocking, at the green’s door, and Stevenson failed to get rid of the hall quick enough to cap the chance of a score. Huff shortly after had a shot from a free kick without success. The yelloAv forwards Avere making things Avilling, and Rankin, Ross, Stevenson and Thompson backed up the pressure, but the green defence held good, and half time came Avith yellow attacking. Both teams kept play in neutral territory for a time in the second half, bad handling spoilt greens break aAvay on tAVO occasions. A forward rush by yelloAvs near the green line saw Hornblow break through, but the offside infringement enabled Picard to clear, and shortly after Thompson battled over but a scrum folloAved, and green rushed play to midfield, Avhere Chipper Avas injured and had to retire, Heta replacing him. Procter put in a strong run, but a forward pass nullified. Green attacked and smothered Huff’s return, and set up a combined attack, but faulty handling by one of their backs pulled them up. Play Avas now fast and furious, neither side gaining any advantage. Picard got away and transferred to Butt to Croon who broke through the opposition and scored Avell out. Picard failed with the kick and scores Avere even —3 all. Both sides Avere uoav making the game fast and open, H. Ross could not transfer the oval quick enough to Stevenson, but Thompson was handy and put in a strong run down the line and shortly after Procter carried on, ‘ but the ball was returned to centre. Again the yelloAvs put in a strong attack, the ball travelling from Ross, Stevenson to Thompson Avho battled over in the corner. The major points were not added —Foxton G—Miranui 3. The game continued fast, both sides battling hard. The green three-quarter line looked dangerous but bad handling spoilt the advance. Back came the yellows and HornbloAV pushed through, but offside play spoilt the attack, and greens transferred play to yelloAvs 25, but the defence was sure and across Held in neutral territory the game waxed, and neither side seemed to tire. Thompson on two occasions tried to battle his way through, but the defence held and the game ended in victory Cor the home team, Mr. Bevan controlled the game. Miranui was represented as folloaa'S :
Full-hack: Picard; three-quart-ers : Croon, Mabey, CraAvford; liveeighths: GoodAvin, McEwan; half: Humphries; hookers: Butt, - Ewan; lock: Polglase; breakaways: Farrell, Simpson; supports: Cates, Mason; wing-forwasd: Vevtongen.
