FLIGHT OF SOUTHERN CROSS
NIAGARA’S’ PASSENGERS THRILLED.
Auckland, June 18
Passengers on the Niagara which arrived at Auckland from Vancouver this morning were thrilled with the daily news of the flight of the Southern Cross from Oakland to Brisbane. The chief wireless operator on the Niagara, Mr. 'E. J. Gough, was in daily communication with the Southern Cross, although steamer and ’plane were never closer than 2000 miles.
C IIRISTCHURCTI P R EPA R A TION. AIR FORCE CO-OPERATION. Christchurch, June 14. Mr. S. F. Napper, of Christchurch, who is associated with the arrangements being made for the reception of Captain Kingsford Smith and his parly in Christchurch, should they make this city their destination after their coming flight across the Tasman, had hoped to accompany the airmen from Melbourne in the Southern Cross. However, he received a cablegram from Captain Smith and Air. C. T. Ulm saying they regret they cannot have him with them on Ihe lliglit. Air. Napper says lie is disappointed, but as Captain Smith has decided to make a flight round the world lie will take his American friends, Captain 11. Lyon and Mr. J. Warner, with him. The Americans have been very good to Captain Smith and lie no doubt feels it would be unfair to leave them in Australia while he comes to New Zealand. The Minister of Defence has granted permission for the use of the Wigram Aerodrome by the airmen for the conclusion of their trans-Tasman (light, and lias agreed that every assistance shall be given to them by the staff of the Air Force stationed there. A telegram to this effect was received to-day by Mr. P. R. Climie. The Minister has not yet received official notice of the intended flight.
