THE Mnnawatu County Council lias boon subjected to miicli ad,verse criticism through the Press and by certain bodies in connection with the state oi' the main highways between Sanson and Eoxton, and Poxton and Rangiotu. Possibly much of this criticism and irritation would have been avoided had the Council publicly staled tlie diiliicullies, both financial and otherwise, with which it has been faced, and which has nccessilalcd delay in prosecuting the work'. However, it is pleasing to note that the Council is now tackling the Foxton-Himatangi highway in veal earnest and extra men have been engaged and the work is proceeding rapidly. Old wooden culverts are being removed and replaced by concrete, the width of the road extended, which necessitates the removal of sand dunes and dealing with swamp areas to provide firm and safe foundations. Much of the work presents all the difficulties of new construction which is possibly not- recognised by the travelling motorist. Apart from this extraordinary work, practically a new foundation has to bo laid'on the existing road. This portion of the main highway will, m the near future, be equal to the best between Wellington and New Plymouth, and the Council is to be complimented upon the thoroughness with which the v.oik L proceeding.
