FOOTBALL.

PLAYER DISQUALIFIED FOR TWELVE MONTHS. At the usual monthly meeting of the Horowhenua District Council, held in Levin last Tuesday, Mr. D. M. T. Cross, secretary of the Manga tuku Club, wrote under date May 29th, with reference to D. Bailey, a member of that club, having been ordered off on Saturday, May 26, at Manakau, in the match against Hui Mai juniors. The club regretted the occurrence very much, and wished to expresg sympathy with the referee. In a subsequent communication the secretary acknowledged receipt of notification of the suspension of Bailey. The chairman said the offence was a very serious one, and, as the player wanted to take action against the referee after being ordered off, it was time for the Council to take action against the player. Mr. Procter moved and Mr. Hooper seconded that Bailey be suspended till the end of the season. The chairman said that this proposal was too lenient in the case of a player who had wanted to strike the referee. The motion was withdrawn, and the chairman substituted one disqualifying Bailey for 12 months from the date of the offence. # This was seconded by Mr. Phillips and carried. SUSPENSION FOR TWO SATURDAYS. A report was received from Mr. E. Bevan, referee in the junior match, Hui Mai v. Paraparaumu, that during the first spell he ordered off W. J. Hurren, a Paraparaumu player, for striking a Hui 'Mai player. With reference to this matter, a letter was received from Mr. F. C. Middleton, secretary of the Paraparaumu Club, stating th'at Hurren admitted his guilt under provocation. He had kicked the ball and was afterwards tackled, and on the spur of the moment he struck his opponent. After the game he expressed his regret to the secretary. The writer expressed the hope that the committee would view the case as lightly as possible. A letter addressed by Hurren to the secretary of his club was enclosed, in which he expressed his regret for the incident. He admitted that he was wrong, but added that he had acted on the spur of the moment. As the club had always had a good reputation, he hoped that he had not injured it in any way. On the motion of Mr. Joyce, seconded by Mr. McDonald, it was resolved that Hurren be suspended for two playing Saturdays. WRONG JERSEYS WORN. It was reported that tlmee Werarea players in the match at Manakau on Saturday were not wearing the club jerseys-.—The club was fined 7/G, being at the rate of 2/0 for each player wrongly attired. ARRANGEMENTS FOR REP. MATCHES.

In response to suggestions contained in a letter from the Manawatu District Council it was resolved that the starting times for the Manawatu-Horowhenua rep. games at Shannon on June 23rd be 1.30 for the B grade and 3 p.m. for the A grade. Mr. J. Greaves, secretary of the Rangitikei Rugby Sub-Union, wrote stating that, at a meeting of the management committee on May 30, the date suggested by Horowhenua for the Bebbington Shield match, to be played at Foxton, was accepted. The third grade fixture was in the hands of the Fixture Committee, and the Horowhenua Council would be advised when the date was agreed upon. The communication was received. The committee resolved that it would not bear any expense for the training of players prior to the Manawatu-Horowhenua games, owing to the state of the finances. The action of the Referees’ Association, in applying to the Wellington Association for the appointment of a referee for the Bebbington Shield match, was confirmed.

Action in the direction of suspending certain competitions fixtures for the convenience of representative matches was taken by the president who moved, in accordance with notice, that no club games be played on June 23rd and July 7th, and that games be postponed once only for any further Bebbington Shield or other lep. match. The first of the dates named is that of the Horowhenua-Manawatu match at Shannon, and the other is that of the Bebbington Shield fixture, Rangitikei v. Horowhenua, at Foxton. The motion was seconded by Mr. S. Hooper, and carried.
