MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The usual monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday, Councillor W. E. Barber presiding. Also present were Councillors H. H. Hunt, D. W. Reid, J. F. McKelvie, W. E. Pearce, and J. Boyce. CORRESPONDENCE. From Public Works Department 'forwarding lheques for £196 18s 4d and £846 18s 8d representing grants on main highways in the county. —Received. From the Treasury forwarding cheques for £3 Is being fines collected at the Foxton Court for the quarter ended March 31st last. — Received. From Public Works Department submitting schedules for completion of estimates in connection with highways maintenance and construction and pointing out that subsidies on main and subsidiary highways would be on the basis of 30/- for £l, and for constructional work £1 for £1. —Received. From the Public Works Department notifying that the RongoteaTangimoana road and the Foxton Beach road had been declared additional main highways. —Received. From the Public Works Department intimating that the Main Highways Board had resolved to take a liberal view of the work proposed on the Foxton-Himatangi road and to class it as maintenance, thus enabling tre granting of a subsidy of 30/- for £1 toward the cost of the work. —Received.

From the Wanganui Automobile Association relative to the cutting back of overgrowth at Intersections on the Foxton-Sanson road. —Referred to the county inspector for action. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT.

The chief items of traffic for the month of May were: Grain 27£ tons, minerals and manure 389| tons, genei’al merchandise 35J tons, stock trucks 37, metal trucks 179, eggs 89 crates, timber 900 sup. feet. Fares amounted to £1 5s sd. The accounts show a credit balance of £l6 10s for the month’s working. The three old engines given by the Railway Department to the council have come to hand and will be dismantled for spare parts. The spare parts obtainable will last the council for many years.—Received. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The traffic inspector (Mr. W. Berry) reported as follows: On account of complaints coming to hand re stock being turned out on the roads at night several trips were made through the- county at night and a number of wandering stock found. The owners in some cases have been before the court and fines ranging from 10/- to 20/and costs inflicted. Several others will be summoned in due course. One person for failing to have a reflector attached to his motor lorry will be dealt with at the next sitting of the court at Bulls. Three building permits have been issued during the month and fees amounting to 20/- collected. Fines at Foxton court amounted to £4 10s.-: — Received. Mi\ E. J. Bowater, Sanson, was appointed poundkeeper. Slaughterhouse licenses were renewed in the following cases: Charles Watkins, Rongotea; John Legg, Bainesse; Philip M. Gedge, Sanson; R. Bryant, Foxton.
