ALL BLACKS THIRD MATCH.
GRIQUALAND DEFEATED BY 19 POINTS TO 10.
Kimberley, June 6. . Showing better form, the All Blacks defeated Griqualand West to-day by 19 points (five tries, two of which were converted) to 10 (a try, a penalty goal, and a potted goal). The match, played in brilliant sunshine on a hard, unturfed ground, was witnessed by a crowd of 5000, but the exhibition by both sides was disajjpointing.
The All Blacks made radical changes in their tactics, playing three men in the front row and four behind, with an extra threequarter in the backs.
The New Zealand team was as follows:—Full-back: D. Lindsay; three-quarters: €. Rushbrook, T. R. Sheen, and F. W. Lucas, with 'S. It. Carleton as an extra; five-eighths: A. Strang and L. Johnston; halfback;: F. D. Kilby; forwards: J. Burrows, P. Ward, R. Stewart (captain), C. Brownlie, R. M‘Williams, E. Snow, and I Finlayson. EVEN SCORING.. In the first half New Zealand got a fair percentage of ball from the scrums. Three minutes after the start Holton kicked a penalty goal from a position in front of the posts'. —Griquas 3 —All Blacks 0. The New Zealanders starte'S a succession of thrusts, the ball coming through the backs to Lucas, who kicked infield for MfWilliams to score near the posts. Lindsay’s kick was charged down. Griquas 3 —All Blacks 3. The Griquas held the ascendancy for a time, and from a serum in front of the p>osts Holton potted a goaf. Griquas 7 —All Blacks 3. SPECTACULAR PLAY. New Zealand were on the defence again until from a penalty in their own twenty-five Strang sent Kilby away. The ball travelled the length of the field, being handled by Lucas, Sheen, M'Williams, Johnston and Rushbrook. The lastnamed raced across to score fi’om a most spectacular movement. The Griquas started a whirlwind forward attack, and when the ball was heeled from a scrum Bok shot over near the corner. The kick missed. Griquas 10 —All Blacks 6.
New Zealand’s next score came from another pretty movement. Kilby whipped the ball away from a scrum to Johnson who passed to Strang, to Sheen (who cut in), to Carleton, to Rushbrook, the lastnamed running over. Lindsay converted. The half-time score was: All Blacks 11 —Griquas 10. New Zealand had the better of the play in the second half, the backs going well. Ten minutes after the resumption Kilby, who was playing a great game, sent the backs away. The ball was handled by Johnson, Strang, Sheen, and Carleton, who cut in and sent Lucas over near the corner. Lindsay’s kick just missed. All Blacks 14 — Griquas 10. The New Zealand backs combined in several pretty movements, just failing to put on the finishing touches. In the last minute of the game Brownlie got away from a line-out, and passed to Finlayson, who swerved his way through to score. Strang converted. The game ended: All Blacks 19 Griquas 10.
