MAW WHO SAVED PREMIER’S LIFE.
♦ CHARGED WITH THEFT OF CLOTHING. Napier, June 6. John Douglas Stark, whose counsel said he had been instrumental
-in saving the Prime Minister’s life during the war by carrying ‘him through heavy gun lire, was found guilty at the Supreme Court today after the jury had been out four hours on a charge of breaking, entering and theft of clothing from a shop in IWairoa. Counsel added that accused had received a telegram from, the Prime Minister since the present charge arose. •Prisoner had a long list of previous convictions, but the chief trouble appeared to be drink. Mr. Justice Ostler stated that in view of what counsel said he would impose a sentence of three years’ reformative detention —instead of five years’ as he originally intended —which could bo reduced by hard work and good behaviour. His Honour pointed out that though only 33 years of age, prisoner had 21 previous convictions, and that he was on the way to being declared an habitual criminal if not in the wider meaning of the term already one.
