BOWLING

ANNUAL MEETING OF LEVIN CLUB.

The Levin Bowling Club held its annual meeting on Wednesday evening last. The annual report contained the following items of general interest : The past season saw a definite increase in the club’s membership, which had previously remained in the vicinty of 40. The Club’s membership now stands at 50 —an increase of 10, attributable in no small measure to the Summer Time Act of 1927. Finance. —The details attached to the balance-sheet show very completely the financial operations of the season. Commencing with a credit balance of £36 13s Bd, a further net profit of £23 18s 3d brought the credit balance at the end of the present season to £6O 11s lid.- In this connection it is worthy of note that the new rule pertaining to the time of payment and the privileges attaching to the payment of subscriptions by the said time had a stimulating effect. Fixed Deposit. —That £25 be placed on fixed deposit for twelve months at the Bank of New Zealand, Levin. Afternoon Tea. —The past season showed a net profit on the afternoon tea account of £l4 3s.

Grounds. —The green has been top-dressed, and it is in splendid order. The young grass is coming away well, and it. is generally accepted that the green presents a better appearance now than it has done for many years past.

Opening Day. —The Committee recommended that the opening day next season he a Saturday, and that in subsequent years the opening day be a Wednesday and Saturday alternately. The retiring president (Mr Foss) in moving the adoption of the report, commended the Management Committee’s recommendation of the appointment of a supervisor of competitions, who would have the backing of the committee in getting off the events. It was held by the committee that such an officer could be of great assistance to the management in getting the club competitions off.

HOME AND-HOME MATCHES TO BE ARRANGED.

Mr McDonald suggested that homc-and-home matches be arranged with Otaki, Shannon and Foxton —three Saturdays in Levin and three away. He moved that the management committee be recoin-" mended to take the necessary steps in this direction,. Mr Sherwood seconded the motion. Mr J. D. Brown suggested that the scheme be drawn up so as to include all clubs in the Manawatu Centre. Mr McDonald intimated that he would be agreeable to this recommendation. The motion, as amended, was carried unanimously. VALUED SERVICES. The sum of £5 5s was voted to the secretary (Mr J. Casey) as a token of tffe members’ goodwill Mr Casey, in responding, said that he had ample evidence of goodwill from the club, the recollection of which he would never lose. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The chairman expressed regret that it would not be possible for Mr T. F. Gibson, vice-president, to allow himself to be nominated for the position of president this year. The members were very sorry that they would not have his company in the 1928-29 season. Officers for the ensuing year were elected :as follows: —President, Mr J. D. Brown; vice-presi-dent, Mr C. Sherwood; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Casey; management committee, Messrs P. Clements, A. W. Hutchings, H. McDonald, F. E. Parker, and W. Smaill; green committee, Messrs T. Edwards, P. Clements and A. Hawke; match committee, Mr Clements (with power to co-opt); auditor, Mr W. Bull; delegates to the Manawatu Centre, Messrs G. N. Stephenson and J. D. Brown. TOURNAMENT AT LEVIN v .SUGGESTED. Mr Parker asked if it would be possible for the Levin, Otaki, Foxton and Shannon Clubs to hold a one-day tournament at Levin. Mr Sherwood remarked that this would provide rather an attractive item during one of the holidays at Christmas or New Year. Mr Clements stated that it would be necessary to obtain the consent of the Manawatu Centre, and the other clubs in the Centre would be able to attend the tournament. The chairman said Mr Parker, as a member of the Management Committee, could bring the matter forward in that committee. A RECTANGULAR SHIELD? Mr Bull raised the question whether it would not be advisable to ask Otaki to join in the Shield matches. If this were possible the trophy would be altered from the Triangular Shield to a “square” shield. (Laughter). He suggested a conference of the three clubs at present interested to consider the subject. The chairman stated that this could go forward as a recommendation to the clubs concerned. It was mentioned that there was a tendency for the Otaki Club to withdraw from the Manawatu Centre and become affiliated with Wellington.
