ALL BLACKS WIN FIRST MATCH.

The All Blacks won their first match against County Clubs of Western Province yesterday by 11 points to 3.

A Capetown cable announces that the All Blacks arrived on Monday. There was tremendous crowds at the station. The surrounding roofs were packed, and resounding cheers burst out as the All Blacks motored to their hotel. The players were welcomed by prominent sportsmen. The enthusiasm was so great that business was temporarily suspended.

Capetown’s welcome to the All Blacks was compared by members of Cabinet with the visit of the Prince of Wales to the Union. Tremendous crowds greeted the team at the station to-day and along the ■route from Durban to Capetown crowds of enthusiasts cheered the visitors.

There was an official dinner at Johannesburg where the team stayed for four hours. A queue of two hundred waited all night to book for the second match. The team for the first match was: — Full-back: Lilburne; three-quar-ters: Grenside, Lucas, Robilliard; five-eigths: McGregor, Nicholls; half: Dailey; wing-forward: Scrimshaw; hookers: Hadley and Swain; lock: Harvey; breakaways: M. ißrownlie and Finlayson; back row: Stewart and Hazlett. H.R.UC. MEETING. The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby District Council was held in Levin on Tuesday evening. Mr. Hutchins represented the local Club. MASON SUSPENDED FOR THREE MATCHES.

Mr. W. Neville, of Foxton, wrote reporting that, in the junior match Shannon v. Foxton, at Foxton on Saturday last, he ordered a Shannon player, named Mason, off the field for continually disputing his (the referee’s) rulings and remarking to his fellow players that they were playing 16 men. The writer added that he had given the lad a warning early in the game. The Shannon Club, through their secretary, Mr. G-. Mitchell, forwarded a letter protesting against the ruling of the referee in the junior match, Shannon v. Foxton. The protest, the letter stated, was against the rulings (1) in orderingoff Mason and (2) in not awarding a try to the Shannon team but a five-yards scrum when, it was alleged a clear try was scored by a Shannon player namely White. The Shannon Club asked that the match be re-played at Foxton. A protest fee of 10/- was enclosed.

The referee did not attend, but Mason was present, and, after being examined, he was suspended for three playing Saturdays’ the suspension extending to June 25th.

After a discussion of the Shannon Club’s letter, the Chairman having ruled that there was no appeal against a referee’s decision on question of fact, the protest was withdrawn by the Club’s delegates, and the committee agreed to refund the protest fee. (A fuller report of the case will be published in a subsequent issue). FOXTON THIRDS v. SELWYN FOURTHS. The secretary of the Foxton Club, wrote applying for permission for the Foxton thirds to play Selwyn Fourths (Wellington), on the Foxton racecourse on June 4th. The application was granted, on the motion of Mr. Procter, with the proviso that the Council’s insurance scheme shall not apply to the fixture. FOXTON PLAYER DISABLED FOR SEASON. Intimation was received from the Foxton iClub that H. Taylor received head injuries in the junior match against Shannon on May 5 and would be unable to take the field again this season. An application was made for a pass to be allowed the injured player, but the committee was unable to grant this, as he was not covered by the insurance scheme. OATES AT FOXTON. The Foxton secretary reported by letter that arrangements had been made for the supervision of gates, and that the takings would be remitted to the committee prior to its weekly meetings. Mr. Hutchins stated that provision had been made for checking the roll of tickets immediately after each match. A WEDNESDAY MATCH. An application by Mr. Joyce for the Foxton Wednesday team to play the Levin half holiday team on the Levin Park Domain, was granted; the Council’s insurance scheme not to apply to the match.

At the weekly meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Council held in Palmerston North on Tuesday evening the Horowhenua Union wrote acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Manawatu-Horowhe-nua Rugby Union embodying the suggestion that Horowhenua Union play the Manawatu Union’s “B” representative match, as a curtainraiser to the “A” game at Shannon on June 23. The Horowhenua Union were agreeable to the proposal, and suggested the game be played at 1 p.m. —It was agreed that the “B” representative game be played, provided that the starting times be 1.30 p.m. for the “B” game and 3 p.m. for the “A” match. Motor conveyance will be arranged.

Mr. R. Sands was elected as referee for the “A” representative game, and Mr. T. Parata for the “B” fixture. The playing of the •two games, it was felt, allows the selectors a much better opportunity of seeing all the talent available for the Manawhcnua representative team. ' The Dannevirke sub-Union confirmed August 4 as the date of the match with Manawatu. The Canterbury Rugby Union has accepted a challenge from Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield, the match to be played on August 4. The following- will represent Foxton Thirds against Sclmyn Fourths on Monday:—

Huff, Anderson, Ball, Easton, Hartley, Dunn, G. Hirini, Taylor, Anderson, Smith, Newton, Hofmann, Moore, Baird, Newth. The Selwyn team will arrive by bus on Monday.
