FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the President's report to be submitted to the annual meeting of the Foxton Chamver of Commerce to be held in Ross’s rooms at 7 p.m. on Thursday next:—

The Chamber lias given attention to many matters of importance both to the town and district duriny the year with successful results. Coal through the port:—The Railway Department were communicated with recommending that coal he shipped through the port. A reply was received requesting the Chamber to submit the name of a reputable shipping firm which would land 15,000 tons of coal at Foxton and asking for the cost of same on trucks. The Chamber was unable to obtain the information, and referred the matter to the Harbour Board. Nothing further was done in the matter. ' Flood Menace: —The attention of the Moutoa Drainage Board was drawn to the Hood menace at Whirokino but this body was unable to remedy the menace.

Flaxmilling Bonus: —The Chamber co-operated with the FlaxmilIcrs’ Association in connection with the re-instatement of bonus on improved flaxmilling, machinery, butso far the Government has done nothing in this connection. New Courthouse: —The agitation by the Chamber for the erection of a new' Courthouse has resulted in the Minister for Justice giving a firm promise that the building will be erected at an early date. Continuous Telephone Service: — As a result of the Chamber’s efforts the continuous telephone service is now in operation. Rural Delivery:—The Chamber’s efforts in this connection have resulted in a rural delivery being established between FoXton, Oroua Downs and Moutoa. Railway to Seaside: —The Railway Department has been communicated with, urging that a light line be constructed to the seaside. Co-operation in this .matter has been promised by the member for the district and the'Palmerston N. Chamber. : Daylight Saving:—A letter of congratulation w r as forwarded to Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P., on the passing of the Daylight Saving Bill, and a request made to the Prime Minister and the member for the district to give their whole-hearted support to having the Bill made permanent measure. Beach Roads: —The "Chamber communicated with the Manawatu County Council, Harbour Board and member for the district in reference to an improved road to the seaside, and asked that the Sanatorium road bo constructed. As a result the Highways Board have declared the road a subsidiary highway. Mail matters: —Cinsiderable attention was given to the subject of the arrival and departure of southern mails, with the result that a more satisfactory arrangement now obtains. County Roads: —The Chamber communicated with the Manawatu County Council and Highways Board re the unsatisfactory condition of the main highways within •the county. So far nothing has been done of a permanent nature on the Foxton-Sandon and FoxtonRangiotu highways, but these two roads will receive attention at an early date. Metal is now being spreal on the former road which is also being widened. Motorists Camping Area: —Sign boards have been erected at the Chamber’s request, directing motorists to Foxton’s camping area on Victoria Park. The Borough Council could not accede to the Chamber’s request to instal gas in the park.

Borough Matters:—The Chamber asked the Borough Council during the year to tar seal the northern road entrance to the town a chain past Russell Street corner and this : latter will receive the attention of the Council at an early date. A request was also made for a public convenience in the town, and an amount has been placed on the estimates for this work. An application for a street lamp for Francis Street will also receive the attention of the Council. New Members: —Five new members were enrolled during the year, Since last annual meeting Messrs IT. Hornblow, R. G. Millen, F. G. Yeo and A. Alsop, members of the Chamber, left the district and were farewelled by the Chamber. The attendance of members at meetings throughout the year has been satisfactory, only one meeting lapsing for the want of a quorum. BALANCE SHEET. Receipts: 'Balance 1/5/27 £2 5s 2d, subscriptions £l6 16s 6d, a total of £l9 Is Sd. Expenditure: Secretary’s honorarium £3 10s Od, rent meeting room £1 5s Od, printing, advertising and stationery £3 Is Od, postages, etc. £1 4s Od, C/A fees, etc. 14/-, su b. A.N.Z. Chambers of Commerce £3, travelling expenses £1 10s Od, refund 15/-, a total of £l4 19s Od, showing a credit balance of £4 2s Bd.
