NEWS IN BRIEF.

It was reported at a meeting of the Ashburton County Council that 1162 drivers licenses, including those of eight new drivers examined, had been issued during April throughout the county. A shipment of butter totalling 8532 boxes was taken from Auckland by the Niagara which sailed for Vancouver this week. Of this amount 5050 boxes are for Shanghai, 900 boxes for Victoria, British Columbia, and 1202 boxes for Honolulu . It seems that even the pig, which from its internals has hitherto furnished the outer covering for a delectable and popular article of diet, is to be pushed off the market by the forest tree, as far as the making of sausages is concerned. A machine has recently been invented which enables Cellulose, in the form of viscose, to be forced by ' pressure through an annular opening, and be thus quickly and economically transformed into sausage casings. These, it is claimed are much superior to the intestinal form, being clean, hygienic, not subject to putrifaction, and capable of use without any preliminary preparation.

W|ork in progress on the East Coast Railway claimed the attention of members of the Hawke’s Bay Power Board while on their wav to Lake Waikaremoana last week, particularly when the Mobutu River was reached, and there was evidence of investigations being carried out for one of the great works of the railway—the Mohaka viaduct. Crossing the river at the great height of 320 ft., the viaduct, which will be 940 ft. in length, will be one of the engineering wonders on the line. Boring operations are nearing completion, the bores having been put down to a depth of 60ft. Once the nature of the river bed is known, the officers of the department will be able to proceed with the design for the construction of the great piers that are to support the viaduct.
