Marton, May it)

William Connell, a carpenter, an elderly married man with a wife and family residing in Wanganui, was burned to death in a. tworoomed wharc on the side of the road at Marton Junction.

The fire was discovered shortly after four o’clock this morning. When the brigade, arrived the task of saving the building was almost hopeless and despite good work the whole of the building 4was .destroyed. It was hoped that Connell, who was known to be the only occupant, had escaped, but his charred remains were later found in what was once his bunk. The building was in an isolated spot and consequently it was some time before the outbreak was discovered. The cause is a mystery.
