GRADING STATISTICS

The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper-tow and stripperslips graded during the year ended 3.lst March, 1028, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows, the Dominion totals and percentages for the previous year being also shown for

Two-hundred and thirty-six bales at Pieton and three at Blenheim were graded fine. Pour hundred and fifty-nine bales at Auckland, 1185 at Wellington, 1092 at Foxton, 11 at Blenheim, 79 at Lyttelton, and 42 at the Bluff were rejected. Seventy-nine bales at Wellington and 30 at Foxton were condemned.

The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number and percentage for the previous year being given in parenthesis: —Fine 239, .27 per cent. (503, .64 per cent.); good , fair 5850, 0.56 per cent. (8011, 9.12 per con.); high fair 29643, 33.26 per cent. (41557, 47.29 per cent.); low fair 40121, 45.01 per cent. (27013, 30.75 per cent.); common 10300, 11.50 per cent. (7808, 8.89 per cent.); rejected 2868, 3.21 per cent. (2813, 3.2 per cent.); condemned 109, .12 per cent. (104, .101 per cent); a total of 89130 bales as against 87871 bales graded the previous year, an increase of 1259 bales.

The number of bales graded at -each port was, the previous year being given jn parenthesis :—Auckland 21989 (16,838), Wellington 25337 (29400), Foxton 19021 (21905), Wairoa 1055 (2356), Pieton 852 (942), Blenheim 1513 (1936), Lyttelton 1374 (783), Dunedin 1197 (1572)j Pt. (1207, 4.74 per cent.); a total of 26557 bales as against 25445 bales graded the previous year, an increase of 1112 bales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 6894, Wellington 5379, Foxton 4884, W)airoa 744, Picton 339, Blenheim 734, Lyttelton 393, Dunedin 13, Pt. Chalmers 475, Bluff 5796, Waikuku 906.

Stripper tow: —One hundred and sixty-two bales at Wellington and 28 at Foxton were graded Ist grade. Forty-five bales at Auckland, 701 at Wellington, and 352 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Forty-five bales at Auckland, 48 at Foxton and 130 at Wairoa were graded 3rd grade. Thirty-six bales at Auckland and one at Wellington were condemned. A total number of 1548 bales as against 2079 bales graded the previous year, showing a decrease of 531 bales. Stripper-slips:—One hundred and forty bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade. Eighty-eight bales at Auckland, 384 at Wellington, 38 at Foxton, 31 at Lyttelton and 184 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. Twelve bales at Auckland, 16 at Wellington and 57 at the Bluff were condemned. Forty-one bales at Auckland, 42 at Wellington and 1340 at the Bluff were passed for export. The total number graded was 2373 bales as against 2629 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 256 bales.
