WIEDNESDAYITES AT GRIPS. EOXTON v. PALMERSTON. A DRAWN GAME. The Palmerston and Foxtoi Wednesdayites met at the loea racecourse yesterday afternooi and finished a somewhat strenuous game with hon'ours even, f points each. Rae scored a trj and kicked a penalty goal foi Palmerston, and Broad and Fullei scored a try each for Foxton. The teams are not under the'jurisdiction of any governing body and subject only to the laws of the game as interpreted by the referde. Both teams took the game very seriously, and both included a leavening of Saturday players. Off the field they are the best of “cobbers,” particularly so 1 , when holding a.post mortem of the game at the refreshment table. But once the whistle sounds to commence hostilities brotherly love ceases and they play like cave men. The referee on this occasion was of the stature of the Biblical Zaeckaeus and it was difficult to locate him from among the “gladiators.” One however, knew he was somewhere in the press because of the shrill notes of the whistle. The game rushed 'up and down the field and players were seen sprawling in all directions. Arguments were numerous and played no unimportant part in the heated contest. One scrum break-up disclosed the fact that among the players a worldbeater with a wallop which would do credit to Heeney was unearthed for it was alleged that his poke connected with a Palmerston player’s nasal organ with such force as to “spread it.” The injured party left to receive medical attention and a substitute was found to carry on the good work. On another occasion a local player was sprawled out and after the oval had left his affectionate embrace an opponent’s boot connected with his ribs with a resounding thud. An argument ensued as to whether playing the man should be substituted for playing the ball. Anyhow the game continued without further mishap and judging by the hearty cheers at the conclusion each side appeared to have enjoyed the gladiatorial combat and promised to have another friendly game at a later date. Mr. A. Walls controlled the game. The visitors were entertained to tea at Walls’ after the match and spent an enjoyable social hour.
