Railway engines are said to make use of only five per cent, of the heat generated in their boilers.
Britain has established during the last four years thirty-four new industries, giving employment to 874,000 people. Of the total local passenger traffic of Greater London, 60 per cent, is handled by the Underground and allied companies. In some American cities certain streets are closed to motor traffic at fixed times to permit children to use them as playgrounds. At a fashionable London restaurant a “sunlight lamp” is used to treat sickly potted plants. A wild orchid, bloomed in eight hours after exposure to the health-giving rays and a faded bouquet, worn by a woman, was placed under the light to revive it.
