ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS.
The annual meeting of householders for the purpose of electing school committees in the Wanganui Education Board’s district, were held last night. There was a small attendance at the local meeting, which was presided over by Mr. J. K. Hornblow. The committee’s report reviewed the year’s work which included certain improvements to the grounds and playing areas; the gift of the land by the beneficiaries of the late Ihakara Tokomaru and the erection of the high school building on the same; a grant for the furnishing of the secondary department had been made and steps were being taken to level and turf the site. The old master’s residence is to be ssold and removed, and it was recommended that the site be used for agricultural purposes. The need for increased playing area was stressed and it was recommended that the incoming committee endeavour to acquire a section' at the rear of the school for purpose. Other matters of a routine nature were also referred to. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £74 6s lOd. The receipts totalled £443 Is 9d (including credit balance carried forward from last year of £9B 16s (Id), and the expenditure £368 14s lid. The principal item of receipts were capitation and subsidy £223 4s Od, picnic £l4 14s Od, donation £lO, concert £59 0s sd, sale of iron £l2 10s Od. The principal items of expenditure were school cleaning £136 3s Od, ground improvements £54 13s 9d, fuel and lighting £27 ■lßs 3d, stationery, etc., £l7 17s sd, sanitation and water charges £lO 3s Id, fuel and lighting £27 18s 3d, maintenance and repairs £l4 14s Od, library £24 14s 7d, singing tuition £2B 4s 6d. The; report and balance-sheet were adopted and complimentary references made to the work accomplished both by the committeo and staff. The nominations for committee did not exceed the vacancies to be filled and the following were declared elected: Messrs S. E. Cowley, D. Christie, J. Iv. Hornblow, H. Hutchins, G. Huntley, M. ■E. Perreau, John Ross, R. Rangiheuea, and A. W. O. Stevenson. The headmaster submitted a comprehensive report (published elsewhere).
Complimentary speeches were made by Messrs Nicholas, Perreau, Stone, A. G. Huntley and Good, and the usual votes of thanks and appreciation to the headmaster and staff carried.
At a subsequent meeting of committee Mr. J. K. Hornblow was reelected chairman, Mr. R. Rangiheuea secretary, and Mr, J. Moir, auditor. It was decided to meet on the first Monday in each month.
