MANAWATU HIGHWAYS.
The Manawatu County engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as follows on the works in the Awahou riding at Monday’s meeting:— Himatangi-Sanson road. —Continual patching and grading has been carried out, drains have been cleaned and culverts attended to. Many places on this road, having too great a camber, could be similarly treated as the Sanson-Awa-huri road. Himatangi-Rangiotu road.—Patching and grading has been carried out on this road. Lupin and gorse has been cut. iFoxton-Himatangi road.-—Owing to its unusual shape this road is now very costly to maintain. Grading and patching has been carried out and river-bed metal has been graded on to the widened portions of this road; but it is inevitable that special treatment be given to this highway as the cost of maintenance is out of all proportion to the results attained. Foxton-Shannon and Whirokino roads. —Grading and patching has been .carried out, culverts and grains have been attended to and a culvert by Mr. Pigott’s farm has been lowered. New Shannon bridge approach road. —The formation of this road has been carried out to’the extent of sixteen, chains. Sixteen chains of fencing, has been erected. The whole of this work should be completed in about three weeks time. Notice has been, given to the Power Board to remove certain poles now. on the road.
Awahou riding.—Very little woi’k has been carried out in this riding with the exception of patching on Bowes’ road and trimming up Kere Ivere and Spring’s road. Grading has been carried out on the Foxton Beach, No. 1, and Poplar roads. A little banking has been done on the Beach road.
The Manawatu County Council traffic inspector reported as follows at Monday’s meeting:—To date 859 drivers’ licenses have been issued. There are still some 130 to issue to make the total the same as for last year. However, they now take the risk of being caught driving without a license as the inspectors in the boroughs and towns are taking active stepsto stop motorists and examine their licenses to see if they have been renewed and those caught driving without the new license will probably have to pay for the privilege through the court.
