HOBSON SHIELD SPORTS.

TROPHY AGAIN WjON BY FOXTON SCHOOL.

The second annual contest for the Hobson Shield, presented by the Mayor of Levin for the premiership in school sports in the district, was held on the Levin Park Domain on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of a good number of spectators. The weather was capital, being neither too warm nor too cold. Four schools * were represented in the competitions—namely, Levin District High School, Levin Convent School* Foxton District High School, and Shannon State School. As on the first occasion, the trophy was won by Foxton, whose aggregate of points was well ahead of those of the other competing schools. The opints were allotted in the separate events in the proportions of five for first, three for second, and two for third. Foxton’s total was 91;, Levin was second with 63, Shannon was a close third with 62, and Conl # ' vent scored 24, having a smaller representation than the others. At the conclusion of the sports, Mr Hobson, Mayor of Levin and President of the Levin A.A. Club, in presenting the Shield, congratulated Foxton on their performance

and advised the other schools to go in for more intensive training. He was specially; impressed with the way the Foxton team ran their races and the modest way in which they took their victory. Mr Mason, headmaster of the Foxton District High School, in replying, said that gentlemen like Mr Hobson who donated shields for in-’ter-sehool competition, were deserving of the highest commendation. Athletics and other school

games not .only catered for the physical welfare of the children, but for the mental and moral side as well. Although Foxton had been iso successful in the athletic side of school life, they were not neglecting the educational side, this being shown by the' high percentage of proficiency certificates gained last year. He paid, a tribute to the work assistant teachers were doing outside school hours. Mr McDonald, the secretary of the Schools Sports Association, who was responsible for a great deal of hard work, was paid a tribute to by Mr Mason, who said that he was afraid Ihat people did not realise what a great deal of work he had to do.

Foxton team then gave three cheers for the other competitors, 1 and all the children gave three cheers for Mr Hobson, the donoiw.of the Shield.

Mr Foss, headmaster of Levin District High School,, also spoke, paying a tribute as a headmaster to the good work assistant teach- . ers were doing outside their official duties. He was afraid that inspectors did not always realise* this. He congratulated Foxton on their win, but said that next year Levin would be ready for them.
