STRUCK BY FIRE ENGINE.

BOY SERIOUSLY INJURED. Auckland, April 15. Serious injuries were sustained by John Cook, aged 9, when he fell under the wheels of the Newmarket Fire Brigade engine, which was on the way to a fire this afternoon. The brigade received the call at 1.10 p.m., and was about to turn into a street about two hundred yards from the station, where'- the outbreak was reported, when a boy who was standing on the footpath among -the crowd fell into the roadway. A small dog with which he was playing apparently tripped him up, and both he and the animal were flung into the track of the engine. The machine swerved, but the boy was caught by the back wheel and flung aside. He was admitted to the hospital in a critical, condition, suffering from a fractured arm, concussion, and internal injuries. The dog had to be destroyed.
