WASTING MONEY.
MOTOR RE-REGISTRATIONS.
That the system of annual registration of motor vehicles involved an economic waste and further that not enough of the money raised locally thereby was being spent in the Wanganui district were opinions expressed at the last meeting of the Wlanganui Chamber of Commerce (says the Chronicle). The Chairman (Mr W. J. Gilberd) suggested that the Chamber should urge upon the Government the ne-> cessity for some better system of tax collection being installed and supported a straight-out petrol tax with the abolition of annual reregistrations. Another member stressed the loss of valuable time to motorists who had to wait in queues in order to obtain new number plates, but it was pointed out that the Government could hardly be blamed for that when ample provision was made weeks before hand and the public did not respond until the eleventh hour.
Mr T. H. Rice said he understood that the annual cost of collecting the tax was about £IO,OOO, which was absurd when the money/ could be obtained ajt little cost through the Customs.
It was decided to work in with the Wanganui Automobile Association in whatever action that body might be taking in connection with the matter.
