Thirty-seven peers and thirtyone peeresses died last year; while three baronies and seven baronetcies became extinct, seven new peers and thirteen new baronets were created. The finest fabrics are waterproofed by the Chinese by immersing them in a mixture of -Joz. of white wax and one pint of spirits of turpentime. The articles are hung in the open air to dry. The largest map in the world is in San Francisco. It cost £20,000, and took eighteen months to complete. It is 200 yards long and 6 yards wide, and shows the whole of California in relief. Eight sons, three daughters, and 15 grandehildren were present at
the unveiling of a stained glass window at Seotby Church, near Carlisle, in memory of Mrs. Burnett, widow of a former vicar.
Adding one hour a day to the seven worked by Civil Servants would, it is estimated, reduce the cost of administration by 17 per cent. The change would /iff'ect about 30,000 Civil Servants.
Two motor cyclists competing in a race at the motor cycle sports at New Brighton on Saturday crashed through a railing at a corner and were seriously injured. They were Walter George Thomas, aged 26, and Erie Pvke, aged 20.
