NEWS AND NOTES.
The announcement that a referendum, with a bare majority on the Prohibition question will be held in New South Wales in September has had a marked effect on brewery shares on the 'Sydney Stock Exchange. Owing to the nervousness of shareholders and their desire to dispose of shares, prices have fallen considerably. The total marking down in two days amounted to £945,000.
A startling discovery was made by a Wellington resident and his wife on Saturday afternoon when walking up one of the paths leading up .the hillside between Ngahaurartga and Petone. Suddenly they heard what the lady described as a sound which resembled a bleat. On looking round they found that the cry came from a newly-born baby, which had been left unclothed under a tree. When they had got over their surprise they sent for the police, who handed the baby over to the Alexandra Home.
