HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING.

OPENING CEREMONY TO-MOR-ROW AFTERNOON.

To-morrow afternoon will be a red letter day in the educational history of Foxton, when the new building to accommodate the secondary pupils will be officially opened by the Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister of Education. The ceremony will commence at 2.30 p.m. sharp. The land upon which the new building has been erected is the gift of the daughters of the late chief Ihakara Tukumaru and their successors, and its area is over a quarter of an acre with frontages to Ravensworth Place and Duncan Street, and backs up to the school property on the northern side and adjoins Ihakara Garden on the eastern side. The site is several feet above the road level, but lower than the crest of the hill in Ihakara Garden, which partly obscures a view of the building from Park Street, but, the main entrance, with its ornate appearance, is seen from Main Street. The generous gift of the land on the part of the owners facilitated the sanction and erection of the building, and a stone is erected on the south-east corner bearing a fitting tribute to the donors. It may be mentioned that the garden reserve which adjoins the new building and which adds to the attractiveness of the school, was also the gift to the borough by the same beneficiaries and therein lies the remains of Ihakara.

The ceremony will open with the National Anthem, the pupils will then salute the flag and recite the declaration and sing one of the school songs. The Mayor will tender congratulations on behalf of the townspeople; Mr. Hone McMillan will formally hand over the deeds to the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board (Mr. Collins), and brief speeches will be made by Messrs J. Linklater and J. A Nash M.P’s., and other representative men and the Minister will reply and perform the opening ceremony. The public will then be invited to inspect the interior of the building. The ceremony will take place in front of the main entrance to the building.
