DRAFTING SHEEP FOR SALE,
STOCK AGENTS IN COURT,
Pahiatua, March 17.
A case of interest to farmers’ stock firms arose when numbers pf stock agents were eha%ed with working' on Sunday drafting sheep .at the saleyards. One defendant explained that drafting could not have been done in time on the morning of the sale. The same course had been adopted in previous years. It was necessary to have the ewe fair on a Monday in order to avoid clashing with the regular sales of neighbouring towns.
The Magistrate (Mr. Stout, 5.M.,) said that a town that really relied on the farming community should not object to a certain amount of drafting on a Sunday when the work was a necessity. Being an annual occurrence involving the handling of a very large number of sheep, the Magistrate agreed to take the’ ease on its merits. The work quite possibly could not have been done in time on Monday morning and the case was therefore dismissed.
