NEWS AND NOTES.

A Morrinsville resident recovered a sum of money in lucky circumstances last week. The money was placed in a dust-bin at night time for safe keeping, but in the morning the owner found .that the dustman had removed the rubbish. A hasty journey to the rubbish tip resulted in the owner finding his money while the rubbish was burning. 9 Something of a record has been created in the flights of small balloons by the Christchurch Observatory, in order to test the upper aircurrents. A correspondent in the World’s News writes: Twenty years ago, a young chap, call him Broke, pleaded with a. citizen, one Banks, of my home town, for a little financial assistance in the way of a train fare to Sydney, and the price of a few meals. Banks, being soft-hear-ted, listened to the stranger’s yarn, kissed a pound note good-bye, and wished Broke luck. Before departing, the borrower recorded Banks’ name carefully on a piece of paper, and promised some day to show ’his gratitude. Time went by, and nothing was heard of the loan, until a short while ago, when one of the local banks got in communication with Banks, and asked him to call for a sum of £IOO, which a client of theirs, by the name of Broke, had lodged with them in Ins (Banks’) favour. Broke was showing his gratitude.
