£l4oo STOLEN FROM POST OFFICE.
POSTAL CLERK ARRESTED

A robbery occurred in the Money Order and Savings Bank department of the Chief Post Office on Monday, when £1,400 Avas stolen.
It is stated that £I4OO was sent as a remittance through the post and received at the office, When figures were gone into at the close of the day’s operations, it is alleged, the sum mentioned was missing. As none, of the clerks could give any information as to its whereabouts, the police were informed. As the result of inquiries made, 'Detective Baylis, who was handling the case, yesterday arrested a postal clerk, aged 18, and charged him with the theft of the money.
The police state ’ almost the whole of the £1,400 has been recovered.
The accused will appear in tho Magistrate’s Court this morning, ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY. LATER. A Post Office cadet, named Charles William Matthews, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate’s Court to-day to stealing a canvas bag containing £.1400 in £1 notes on Monday. Detective McLennan said accused denied the theft, but later produced a parcel from, a wardrobe at his home. The parcel contained £1386 17s 3£d. Accused said he had sent ■£lo to pay a debt and spent £3 2s 8 Id. The £lO had been recovered and the accused had signed an authority for the other amount to be taken out of wages due to him.
The accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail of £2OO being allowed. The suppression of his name was refused.
