BOXING.
PURDY WINS LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Sydney, March 11. At the Stadium Charlie, Purdy (N.Z.), 9.8£, outpointed “Bluey” Jones, of Australia, 9.6 f, in a' fifteen rounds’ contest for the Lightweight Championship of New Zealand and Australia. Jones attacked. aggressively in the early rounds, scoring rights to the body. The New Zealand boxer cleanly attacked with both bands to the head and body and secured the majority of points until the tenth round when he appeared to tire. Jones then forced the fighting, winning the next few rounds by a slight margin of points. Purdy’s eye was badly gashed as the result of a. collision of heads in the concluding round. But the New Zealander had a sufficient margin in his favour to win the title comfortably. '
