SAMOAN UNREST.

IMPRISONED MAU POLICE RELEASED.

Apia, March 7.

Four hundred Mau police who were undergoing six months’ imprisonment had their sentences suspended to-day and were instructed to return to their homes and to cooperate with the loyal natives in their districts in holding meetings to decide upon any matters requiring alteration. The Administrator said he recognised -they had been misled by nonnatives, and he was disinclined to continue their imprisonment; but they must understand they must not defy the law any further. > Several Mau natives have paid their overdue taxes.

ADMINISTRATOR TO REPRESENT DOMINION AT GENEVA.

Invercargill, March 9.

The Prime Minister issued the following statement this evening:— “A statement was published some time ago to the effect that the Administrator of the Mandated Territory of Western Samoa (General Sir George Richardson) would retire next May, but would remain in Samoa for a few months longer. This is not correct. General Richardson will complete his term on March 16, and has been appointed New Zealand’s representative at Geneva, when reports in connection with mandates are being considered in June next.

“The selection of General Richardson to represent New Zealand at Geneva is the reason which prevents his reappointment as Administrator on the expry of his present term of offilce. He will, however, continue to hold the present position until his successor is appointed and arrives in Samoa to assume the duties of Administrator. The name of the new Administrator will be announced in due course.”
