TREE-PLANTING.
THREE MONTHS’ WORK FOR 1,000 MEN. Auckland, February 27. “An exceptionally large forestry planting programme has been designed for this year,” stated the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. 0. J. Hawken) last evening. He estimated that there would be three months’ work for 1,000 men from Ist June.
In emphasising that the planting season must commence and end with promptitude, because planting out was governed by the calendar, the Minister said that the number of men to be engaged would include a staff of foremen and trained employees, upon whom the Departmen called every year. However, the majority of workers would be drawn from the ranks of the unemployed. The forestry programme for the season embraced about 44,000 acres, which is nearly 10,000 acres in excess of last year’s record planting. In spite of the dryness, Mr Howken has been given an assurance that there will be plenty of trees for the work, which will be accomplished between'June and September of this year. Most of the work in the North Island will be done in four plantations, Rotorua, Karioi, Riverhead and Maramarua.
