SMALL BOROUGHS TO BE ASSISTED.

Some 185 additional miles of main highways are declared by a supplementary Gazette issued on Saturday. These are streets situated in boroughs with a population of under 0000, which are not eligible to participate in the proceeds from the petrol tax. The object of the Order in Council gazetted is to'place the boroughs referred to on a better footing than has been the case hitherto. Previously these streets, which form the continuation of main highways through boroughs, received maintenance subsidy on the same basis as did the adjoining main highways in the counties; but in future the boroughs concerned will he entitled to a subsidy of £1 10s f° r each £1 of actual expenditure involved in the maintenance of the streets, irrespective of the amount paid by the Main Highways Board to the county councils in respect of the adjoining lengths of main highways. In addition the boroughs will he eligible to receive contributions towards the cost of construction and reconstruction work on the streets that are now declared to be main highways. Foxton is included in the list and participates to the extent of one mile 13 chains, and one mile 55 chains on the Foxton-Shannon main highway.
