At the next General Election it is expected that the number of women candidates will far exceed the thirty-three of the 1922 election. Already thirty-eight are in the field.
Among divorce decrees granted at Auckland last week was one in favour of Mrs. Olga Elizabeth Ifwerson against Karl Donald Ifwerson, the well-known footballer. The parties were married in April, 1924, and entered a deed of separation in October of the same year. The secretary of the Wellington Automobile Club (Mr. H. J. Stott), reports having received advice that the bridge at Mangatainoka, between Pahiatua and Woodville, has been damaged by a heavy lorry. The bridge is unsafe for he/ivy traffic, while drivers of light cars are requested to cross it at a walking pace. They will be using the bridge at their own risk.
The Featherston correspondent of the Wairarapa News states that a prospector has reported the discovery of gold in the Rimutaka Range. Specimens have been brought to Featherston and tested, and also sent to the Mines Department, Wellington. It is reported that gold is present in the quartz in paying quantities.' The wreck of the Norwegian whaler C. A. Larsen at Stewart Island last Tuesday comes close to the 70th anniversary of the loss of an American whaling ship, the Alexander, which met disaster in Cook Strait after a very successful cruise of over two years in the South Seas. The Alexander, a 421-tons ship, struck a reef six miles off shore, near Cape Campbell. The captain succeeded in beaching the ship and a few days later an auction sale was held. The cargo of 1300 barrels of sperm oil brought £2BOO. The hull and whaling equipment realised £495.
