VALEDICTORY.

A pleasing ceremony took place in the Hall at the seaside yesterday afternoon, when residents ahd pupils of the side-school assembled to make a presentation to Miss Clover. Mr. A. Alsop presided and said the object of the gathering was to say good-bye to Miss Clover, who for the past three years had been a teacher at the side-school. Apart from her school duties, Miss Clover had eonductel a Sunday School and had also started and conducted a library. The Beach people and children regretted Miss Clover’s departure and he thanked her on their behalf for the many services for the good of all she had rendered. He also read an apology for absence from Mr. W. H. Nicholas, who paid a fine tribute to Miss Clover’s activities in connection with the Sunday School and conveyed best wishes for her future. An apology for absence was also received from Mr. Perreau.

Mr. J. K. Hornblow (chairman of the D. H. School Committee) said that Miss Clover’s transfer to Wanganui East School was well-merited promotion for her. 'She had been conscientious in the discharge of her duties and her departure would be regretted by all concerned. Mr. F. A. Mason (headmaster), paid a tribute to Miss Glover as a member of the staff , and expressed regret at her departure. He refer, red to her artistic and literary tal"ents and the enthusiasm which marked her school activities. He wished her success and happiness in 'her sphere of work at Wanganui. Miss Thompson (of the teaching staff), said her association with Miss Clover had been a real pleasure. She endorsed the head teacher’s remarks in reference to Miss Clover’s enthusiasm in school work which continued far beyond school hours. All who had been associated with Miss Clover would regret her departure from their midst and their best wishes would follow her. Mr. Shortt endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. Miss Zilla Hartley, senior pupil, in a neat speech asked Miss Clover to accept a leather hat box as a token of esteem from the pupils. Mr. Alsop, on behalf of the Beach residents, handed Miss Clover a camera as a small token of esteem. Cheers were then lustily given for the recipient. Miss Clover feelingly thanked the ■ speakers, children and Beach residents for their kindly wishes and appreciation, i Whatever' she had done had given her real plcasui’G and her relationship with the school, parents and residents had been friendly sympathetic, and helpful. To be of service to others had been her ideal and she had endeavoured to live up to that ideal. She would carry away with her happy memories of her three years’ service at the Beach. Afternoon tea was then dispensed by the Beach ladies. " Miss Clover takes up her duties at Wanganui School next week.
