DAIRY INDUSTRY.
EFFECT OF'DROUGHT
Palmerston N., February 10
The exceptionally dry spell this year, by commencing earlier than in previous years, has had 'a detrimental effect upon the milk returns in Manawatu for the month of January, and as a consequence the outputs of the various factories will be eonsiderally lower than under quite normal conditions. The factories are not all affected to the same extent, some being much belter off than those situated in districts where the drought was greater than in other districts. Recent advice from London quotes salted butter at 1645., with a comparatively slow market. The following advances against supplies received for January have been made by the factories in the Manawatu, the advance per lb. but-ter-fat: being stated in some instances and the gross payment made to suppliers in others: —Newbury (cheese), Is sd; Shannon (butter), Is 3MI; Awahuri (butter), Is 3d; Palmerston (butter), Is 3d. Gross payments: N.Z.F.D.U. (butter), £9487 16s 4d; Tui, Glen Oroua (cheese)," £1900; Tiakitahuna (cheese), £980; Manawatu-Relianco (cheese), £ISOO.
