DAYLIGHT SAVING

NO GOOD TO FARMERS. Members of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union took the opportunity at their regular monthly meeting at Palmerston on Thursday to launch a broadside at the Daylight Saving Act in accordance with other bodies representative of the farmers’ opinion. “I think that the executive should take a stand on this matter,” said the chairman, “and if it is possible call all interested in the dairying and pig raising industries together in conference. I don’t think that until this is done the people will get anything done to set the pig industry on its feet.”

“It entails a great hardship on families whose children have a long way to go to school,” said Mr. J. M. M'Farland. j “My opinion is that it is too hot for the children to walk home in the heat of the afternoon when school ends,” said Mr. L. A. Poupard. Mr. W. P. Bickers said that in his experience, he had found that farmers were unanimous in their disapproval of daylight saving., The chairman said that he had found that housewives did not like Sidey-time as they could not get the children to bed in time. “It is wasting an hour at the end of the day not saving it,” said Mr. Jas. Boyce. “If the people of the towns want, to save daylight, let them open their offices an hour earlier and leave us alone. We do our lmy-making still according to the sun—even Mr, Sidey can’t alter that.” Mr. Boyce then moved that a motion be sent to the Prime Minister and the members for the district, strongly protesting against daylight saving and asking for the repeal of (lie Act.

The motion was carried • unanimously.
