BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. WATERWORKS FOREMAN’S REPORT.

The waterworks foreman reported that during the month one sewer was laid and one water connection piade. Four house drains were cleaned and three houses connected up with the high pressure water supply. Traffic was regulated during race time, dog taxes collected, and general maintenance attended to. An inspection was als,o earned out to see how many householders were using water without meters being connected and several warnings issued as a result. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged on the following works: —Top-dressing bitumen footpaths with tar and chips in Robinson, Russel], Coley, Thynne, and Francis Streets, and weeding Avenue Road path and giving same two coats of tar and chips. The bitumen roads in various streets were “bleeding” somewhat, due to the hot weather, and these were blinded with chips. The grass in Victoria Street was mown and general maintenance work carried out. The staff was now engaged in patching breaks in the bitumen in ‘.Lady’s Mile with colfix, which appeared to be very suitable for the work. An estimate of £9 15s Od per chain was also submitted for tarsealing Avenue Road with two coats of tar to the corner of the Cemetery. To make a permanent job of the work a further coating of tar and chips would be needed which would cost a further £3 10s Od per chain. Cr. Rand reported that the Cook Street footpath required attention and Cr. Walker stated that Russell Street road was also in need of patching. Both matters noted by the Town Clerk for attention. (The Clerk estimated the work to cost £I6OO and it was decided on the suggestion of the Mayor, to do a portion of the road each year. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows From the Green Island Borough Council forwarding the following remit for the Council’s support: “That the present law relating to the construction, reconstruction and maintenance of highways in the Dominion be amended so as to enable the Main Highways Board to take over and be wholly responsible for the main arterial roads in the Dominion with a view to coping with present and future traffic require- . merits.” —Supported. 'The Municipal Association wrote notifying the annual conference of delegates would be held at Nelson on 14th March. —Town Clerk appointed delegate. From J. G. Honore making application to the Council to extend the water main from Spring Street up to his property, a distance of 13 chains. . ’

It was decided that a four inch spiral pipe water main be laid along the Avenue from Spring St. as far as Mr. Honore’s boundary, shbject to Mr, Honore’s paying a minimum water supply rate of £7 per annum.

From the Mayor of Wellington askiny the Council to support an appeal for the dependents of the aviators Hood' and Moncrieff. —Received.

From Mr W. E. Riddle, stating that he had discovered a window broken in a jhouse he owned in Avenue Rd., and as the gas meter had been removed without the keys of the building first being obtained from him it was apparent that the Council employee had smashed the window to gain access to the build-* ing to remove the meter and he therefore expected the Council to make good the damage done. The gas manager reported that the window was broken before the meter was .removed. No action taken. GENERAL. The! consent of the Council was given to the subdivision on account of E. Wanklyn and the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
