FATAL BOXING BOUT.
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST.
AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH.
At the inquest at Bathurst, New South Wales, last week, into the death of Emmett Ambrose Murphy following a boxing match with an aboriginal named Edward Nixon, Sergeant R. Hall said that he saw the fight, and was aware that Murphy had undergone ah operation for appendicitis two months
previously. At the end of each of the second and third rounds, he noticed that deceased returned to his corner slightly dazed. Twice during the contest he felt to the floor, but had never struck the floor. He considered that the contest was fairly even until the fourteenth round when deceased told his seconds that he felt sick, and appeared to collapse. Deceased, though not appearing in actual distress, was bleeding from one ear. Witness did not consider the punishment unduly severe. Michael Murphy, father of the deceased, said that the fight was clean. His son informed him before the fight that he felt weak and intended to “toss in the towel” if the fight lasted more than a few rounds. Deceased had had several falls several years ago, and had since' been frequently melancholy. Dr. Harris said that the examined Murphy before the fight and considered.him fit to engage in the contest. Dr. Busby, Government medical officer, said that the post-mortem examination revealed a clot of blood and hoemorrliage. The skull was not fractured, but a ruptured vein was within an inch of a contusion on the right side of the forehead, apparently caused .by a blow. The corouer returned a verdict of accidental death.
