Mr. H. Hornblow, stationmaster, has receivel notice of his transfer to the district office at Nelson where he will be chief clerk.

Mr, J. W. Fergie, of the stationmaster’s office staff, Palmerston North, has been promoted to the position of chief clerk to the publicity department, Wellington. The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday afternoon of Mr. Alexander Veitcli, late of the firm of Veitch and Allan. Deceased was a well-known bowler and Freemason.

The death is announced from Sydney of David McKee Wright, poet and journalist, aged 61 years. At the time of his death he was a member of the “Sydney Bulletin” staff. Before taking up a journalistic career deceased was a Congregational minister at Wellington and Nelson.

An exchange records the 85th birthday of Mrs. Edward Bull, of 17, Donald Maclean Street, Newtown, Wlellington South, which she celebrated last week. Mrs. Bull, who holds the distinction of being one of the first white twins born in New Zealand, still enjoys good health, and is always happy to relate her memories of early Wellington to her numerous friends.

At last night’s D.H. School committee meeting, when the lack of attendance of Maori children at school was under discussion, the chairman said that this matter would be referred to Mr. R. Rangiheuea, who had been appointed a Child Welfare Officer for the Native children in the district. The committee congratulated Mi*. Rangiheuea on his appointment and members expressed the opinion that in Mr. Rangiheuea the native children had a sympathetic officer and one who would assist them both from an educational and moral point of view. Mr. Rangiheuea thanked members for their kindly references.
