NEWS AND NOTES.
A Wanganui resident who has ■just returned from a visit to Dunedin states that the dour city is in a' sound position both financially and otherwise (says the Herald). Ihe informant stated that on making inquiries regarding the city’s prosperity, he ascertained that being Scotch for the most part, residents of Dunedin do not spend 2/- where 1/- will, suffice, and in this the citizens of the southern centre held, did not bespeak f*or their meanness but rather thrift, which they attribute to their prosperous condition. A striking example of the way in which members of the farming community flock to the assistance of one of their number who happens to be in trouble wa.s given at Meanee, Hawke’s Bay, the other day. when a liaystach became ignited, seriously endangering' the ownei s house, and five other stacks surrounding it. Wi thin a short time after the outbreak was discovered many farmers and workers from surrounding, properties had assembled and were fighting the flames. The fact that Ulie house and the other stacks wer e saved ivas greatly due to the bri; jht idea of one farmer, who secure d his tractor. Having brought the c machine to the spot, the fire-lighters placed a chain round the blazing stack, connected it with the tractor, and let in tho clutch. After many efforts half of the burning m ass was removed to a safer quarter and another like procedure succeeded in placing the lire at a safe distance from the danger zone.
